18/5/2022 - 23/8/2022 The fossil was authenticated by Dr Adam Yates, the Senior Curator of the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. The specimen is a Pterospira sp. which is a kind of sea snail of the slit-shell family (family Pleurotomariidae), now restricted to deep water. It may well represent a new species of Pterospira but that is hard to confirm because good Pterospira fossils are so rare and there is little to compare it to. It dates to the Oligocene epoch making it somewhere between 33 million and 23 million years old. It was discovered in the Limestone Coast of South Australia in an area once covered by the Southern Ocean. As you can from the photos attached the fossil hasn’t been removed from its original mould.
