"FROM THE BROMLEYS"
We thought that , after 6 years of working on the Castlemaine Gaol, and the Bromley collection museum that with such a huge amount of projects that we still were working on within our art practice and away from the Gaol that we would not be able to properly do justice to the ongoing portrayal of the Gaol and the contents to the public …
So … we put the Gaol and contents on the market as one offering …
The main interest in the sale has been in the building so we have decided to lessen the substantial collection
We broke the collection into 888 lots which we felt was way to big for an auction
But … we wanted to start somewhere … so we have chosen just over 300 diverse pieces as a starter to auction through our trusted friends Sam,Gary,Stacey and Taylah at Yarra valley auctions
We will have some small windows of opportunity , time wise , leading up to the auction where the pieces can be seen in situ … for those interstate and overseas we will do our best to be clear in our portrayal
Some of these pieces have been in mine or Yuge and my collections for decades and form a part of a very passionate love of art and design
The collection was put together at times before just about any other consideration … one example would be that for years , any money I had that didn’t go to basic living expenses and art materials , I would spend on collecting the ceramics of artists I would meet when working in pottery in Queensland
The majority of my life when not making art , or surfing was spent scouring markets , auctions, galleries etc
An obsession , absolutely
To me , its no different to someone who plays golf or basketball whenever they can , reads , gardens , travels etc etc
Never have I bought a share … invested money in anything but tactile emotional pieces made in the cultural arenas and really anywhere my / our treasure hunting took us
There is no way that we have turned over a new leaf / changed our collecting addiction
Its just an approach relevant to this time in our lives that we feel like letting some things go
I hope you find some pieces that interest you , we hope that these pieces find some great new homes
