Lead 1948 Excelsior 98cc Autobyk. Restored Condition
Description
c.1948 Excelsior 98cc Autobyk After WW2 the Excelsior range became two-stroke only, the first two models - the Autobyk and Universal - using Villiers power units while the wartime Welbike continued to be built under license (as the Corgi) by Brockhouse Engineering using Excelsior’s own Spryt motor. A 98cc two-stroke single, the latter was redesigned for 1947 as the Goblin, with inclined cylinder and two-speed gearbox, and made its debut in an additional Autobyk model. A further variant fitted with the single-speed Spryt engine was added to the range for 1948 and the Goblin/Spryt-engined pair continued in production until 1956, the Villiers-powered version having been dropped. Excelsior Goblin MkII engine and ‘rubber band’ front suspension.
